Work out your cost per 1,000 impressions, or flip it around to plan a budget. Type two numbers, get the third. No sign-up, no math.
CPM is the price of showing your ad 1,000 times. One formula covers it:
CPM = (Ad spend ÷ Impressions) × 1,000
Say you spend $500 and your ad gets shown 100,000 times. Divide 500 by 100,000 and you get 0.005. Multiply by 1,000 and you land on a $5.00 CPM. Five dollars for every thousand people who see it.
The same formula runs backward. Know your CPM and your budget? Divide to find how many impressions you can buy. Know your CPM and your target reach? Multiply to find the spend. The calculator handles all three so you don't have to.
Typical US ranges for 2025. CPM swings with your industry, targeting, and the time of year, so treat these as starting points, not promises. Your own account is the only benchmark that counts.
| Channel | Typical CPM (2025) | Notes |

CPM means cost per mille, the cost to show your ad 1,000 times. "Mille" is Latin for thousand. Pay $5,000 for 1,000,000 impressions and your CPM is $5. It is the standard way to price and compare awareness advertising, because it measures what you pay to reach people, not what you pay per click or per sale. Almost every ad platform reports it for you automatically.
Divide your ad spend by impressions, then multiply by 1,000. The formula is CPM = (spend ÷ impressions) × 1,000. Spend $500 to earn 100,000 impressions and your CPM is $5.00. You can flip it to plan a budget: at a $5 CPM, reaching 100,000 people costs $500. The calculator above runs all three versions: spend, impressions, or CPM. You never do the math by hand.
It depends on the platform. In 2025, Google Display runs about $2–$5, TikTok around $4–$8, Facebook roughly $8–$14, and LinkedIn $28 or more because you are paying for a business audience. A good CPM is one that still turns a profit after the clicks and sales that follow. A $3 CPM that sells nothing is worse than a $12 CPM that pays for itself. Compare against your own channel, not the cheapest one.
CPM is cost per 1,000 impressions. CPC is cost per click. CPA is cost per action, like a lead or a sale. Which one matters depends on your goal. Running awareness? Watch CPM. Driving traffic? Watch CPC. Chasing sales? CPA is the number that pays your bills. They are linked: a $10 CPM with a 1% click rate works out to a $1 CPC. Track the metric closest to the money.
A few usual suspects. Narrow targeting leaves fewer people to reach, so each impression costs more. A 5,000-person audience will almost always cost you more per view. Peak seasons like November and December push CPMs up 20–30% as everyone bids for the same space. Tired creative gets penalized with higher prices. Competitive industries like finance, insurance, and B2B run pricier by default. Widen the audience, refresh the ad, or move spend off the busiest weeks.
No. CPM only measures what you pay to be seen, not what you get back. A $2 CPM that reaches the wrong people is money gone. A $15 CPM that reaches ready-to-buy customers can be the best spend on your account. Cheap reach on the wrong audience is still waste. Judge CPM next to your results: cost per lead, cost per sale. Not on its own. The goal is profitable attention, not the lowest number.
